Tour Will Take You ‘Back to Hazzard’

Tour Will Take You ‘Back to Hazzard’

Stone Mountain, GA (PRWEB) February 1, 2006

More than 27 years ago, the famous General Lee roared across the Georgia countryside for the first time.

We’re not talkin’ about the Civil War military leader — this General was the hot orange 1969 Dodge Charger whose Dixie horn signaled the start of the long-running action-adventure TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

And now, the Hazzard County Car Club aims to take you down “The Roads Back to Hazzard” with a special tour of the original filming sites of CBS’ primetime hit show, which aired from January 1979 to August 1985 and filmed its first five episodes in the Covington, Conyers and Oxford areas of Georgia.

The Roads Back to Hazzard tour on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5 will span 87 miles of the Rockdale County and Newton County areas and will feature dozens of sites where cousins Bo, Luke and Daisy Duke and their Uncle Jesse first fled the crooked, bumbling Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane and Boss J.D. Hogg. The historic town square in Covington, for instance, was used as the town setting for Hazzard in the initial episodes, while the original building used for the Boar’s Nest still sits on Flat Rock Road off Highway 142.

“We have had people asking all the time about all the sites from the first five episodes filmed in Georgia,” says Jon Holland of Williamsburg, Va., avid “Dukes” historian and president of the Hazzard County Car Club.”We had enough interest in this tour, so for the past two years it had been a ‘work in progress.’ “

Holland explains more about the event: “On Saturday, this tour will include the Dukes farmhouse, bridge sites, roadside scenes, Boar’s Nest, town square, all three General Lee jump sites, both police-car jump sites, the famous junkyard, the Hazzard County ophan’s home, and if people are interested in driving to Atlanta, we’ll give directions to the building used for the Starr Recording studios from the second episode, ‘Daisy’s Song.’ On Sunday, come to Norcross, Ga. and meet and greet the car production crew that built all of the first 49 vehicles used in the first five episodes, at their original shops.”

Holland, who was featured on Country Music Television’s 2005 “Inside Fame” special on “The Dukes” and who has built his own General Lees using information from the show’s mechanics, has organized the Roads Back to Hazzard tour to benefit the Rainbow Ministries Charity of Covington.

“Rainbow Ministries is a charity that basically helps people down on their luck, or who just have no other place to go,” Holland says. “Children that people no longer want are just dropped off on their doorstep. Rainbow Ministries provides food, shelter and clothing. They also help people get back up on their feet and find jobs.”

The tour will begin at the Holiday Inn Conyers, 1351 Dogwood Drive, where the “Dukes” cast and crew stayed during the Georgia filming. At 8 a.m. Saturday in the hotel’s lobby conference room, event tickets will be sold at $ 35 a person, $ 15 for children 12 and under. Attendees will receive a detailed map of all the filming sites and then will organize into groups of 10 or less to do the tour. At 7 p.m., back at the Holiday Inn, there will be prize drawings and a special viewing of a 1979 tape of the first two “Dukes” episodes, with the vintage commercials.

There’ll be raffles and auctions, as well, for merchandise such as photos signed by the show’s stars and authentic car doors from a General Lee and a sheriff’s car used in the show. Metro Atlanta author Billie Rae Bates, whose reference book on the show, “Them Dukes! Them Dukes!” was just released in January, will be on hand to sign copies.

On Sunday, a trip to the H & H Body Shop will highlight some of the cool techniques used by the show’s original mechanics.

The first 200 tour tickets sold, Holland says, will include a booklet featuring exclusive information and photos from the original Georgia filming.

The Holiday Inn is offering a special overnight rate for tour guests on Saturday: $ 65. For reservations, call (770) 483-3220.

Holland wouldn’t mind a bit if this event could become a yearly “Dukes” fan gathering, much like the wildly popular DukesFests hosted by Ben Jones, who played Cooter Davenport on the show.

“We hope this will be a great turnout and very helpful for our charity,” Holland says. “If this does turn out great, we would like, in the near future, to get Covington, Ga., in with our club to have an ‘Annual Hazzard Homecoming.’ We think a lot of people will love seeing how all this came to play. Hope to see everyone there!”

A Respected Major Charity Takes Mercedes Benz to Court After Getting Stuck with Lemon and Spearheads Class Action Suit

A Respected Major Charity Takes Mercedes Benz to Court After Getting Stuck with Lemon and Spearheads Class Action Suit

FL (PRWEB) September 13, 2004

The Florida based charity organization; Instruments for the Youth and its director, Atlanta based Michael Malott have filed a lawsuit against the Mercedes Benz Corporation seeking damages for what they allege as negligence on behalf of Mercedes in Fulton County, Georgia.

Instruments for the Youth supplies free musical instruments, toys, schoolbooks and clothes to underprivileged and impoverished children. They have just launched their ChildrenÂ?s Rock NÂ? Dream Foundation which arranges for celebrity visits to childrenÂ?s hospitals.

The charity has enjoyed the support of a long list of celebrity artists, and major companies including Keith Richards, No Doubt, Billy Joel, Christina Aguilera, Michelle Branch, Third Eye Blind, Backstreet Boys, The Tonight Show, Gladys Knight, Tom Jones and Amy Grant to name a few. The charity is supported by over 50 other major names.

The charities projects have been well publicized especially their Tosh Tribute Album featuring Eric Clapton, Sean Paul, Ben Harper and others. The charity has been featured by CNN Headline News, ABC World News, the Today Show, Rolling Stone, AOL News, MTV, and VH1 and over 100 other publications worldwide. They just released a successful jazz compilation CD featuring Andy Summers (The Police), Poncho Sanchez, Pat Martino, Craig Chaquico (Jefferson Starship) and others. The charity is currently working on a rock compilation CD as well due out in early 2005 and featuring major artists.

The lawsuit was filed as a result of the purchase of an older high mileage Mercedes 190E model car which was to be used by the charity. The charities director had put up the money for the purchase from what was supposed to be an Â?authorized Mercedes Benz resale dealerÂ?. The dealer possessed all the credentials to support that claim including a recent Mercedes Benz sales award and an impressive Mercedes Benz Car Fax Report for the vehicle.

The charity agreed to purchase the car after the dealer, Anthony Riney and Car Works located in Decatur, Georgia agreed to pay one half the cost of repairing the vehicles blown head gasket. The vehicle was to be repaired by his associate who had a shop down the street and had just overhauled the cars transmission the month prior according to Riney.

That night Mercedes Benz was contacted by the charity and failed to identify the dealer as not actually being a Mercedes resale dealer. The representative only confirmed that Mercedes has a resale program.

The vehicle was picked up early the following evening and the dealer assured the charity that all the repairs had been performed.

The vehicle was then taken to another repair facility, Massey Automotive in metro Atlanta to have the work verified and the car looked over. None of the repairs that the dealer had represented to have made were actually made. The charities director then went into money he had been saving expecting his first child in October to pay an additional $ 2000 to have the cars engine repaired and the vehicle checked over. The repairs took over a month, stranding the charity without transportation. Finally the car was picked up from the repair facility and with less then 20 miles on it since its $ 2000 in repairs the transmission goes out and will require another $ 2500 in repairs that the charity could not afford.

So, the charity all of a sudden saw themselves out a total of $ 4500, defrauded by what was supposed to be a reputable Mercedes Benz resale dealer. Forty five hundred dollars which could have gone to provide presents for needy children this Christmas and an amount threatening the continued existence of the nearly year old charity.

However, after the matter was brought up during a local Atlanta AM talk show, the charity started to get contacted by people claiming that they had contacted Mercedes as far back as last year to report the misrepresentations being made by the bogus Mercedes resale dealer and Mercedes had negligently failed to take any action whatsoever to stop such misrepresentations and as a direct result of such negligence the charity alleges Mercedes to have liability for the losses they suffered.

But along the way the charity has found an abundance of dissatisfied Mercedes consumers, anti-Mercedes websites, and prior documented complaints and is looking at spearheading a class action suit against Mercedes.

Some of these websites were featured by Fortune Magazine and Automobile Magazine, who did a feature story on the extremely high customer dissatisfaction rates of Mercedes and Mercedes dramatically falling rating. In fact, according to Fortune Magazine, Mercedes was rated by J. D. Power & Assoc as much worse than average, in fact 26th place.

Â?If we would have known that there were that many unsatisfied Mercedes customers, we never would have even considered a Mercedes, we would have gone for a BMW Â? states the charities director. He adds Â?We relied on what was supposed to be a dependable high mileage carÂ?. The anti-Mercedes websites are all lined with people who made the same assumption and put their trust in the Mercedes name.

Â?WeÂ?ve uncovered evidence that Mercedes had prior knowledge that an individual who sold this charity a vehicle was misrepresenting his affiliation with Mercedes Benz as an authorized re-sale dealerÂ? States Malott. Mercedes has claimed this is not the case. The charity alleges that Mercedes was negligent in failing to take the appropriate action which would have prevented the charity from being defrauded out of $ 4500. The charity simply wanted Mercedes Benz to repair their transmission.

The charities website can be found at http://www.instrumentsfortheyouth.org . The charity is recognized worldwide; and won several awards last year for its efforts and the charity has been commended by the likes of Nelson Mandela, the Prime Minister of Canada and the Prime Minister of Trinidad.

‘Dukes of Hazzard’ ride high at Motor City Comic Con

‘Dukes of Hazzard’ ride high at Motor City Comic Con

Detroit, MI (PRWEB) May 1, 2006

Fans of the TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” have a lot to look forward to at this year’s Motor City Comic Con. The famous blazing 1969 orange Dodge Charger, the General Lee, is on the guest list, along with a host of “Dukes” memorabilia and the author of a new fact book on the show.

The Canadian Dukes of Hazzard Fan Club, based in Ruscom Station, Ontario, Canada, will display the General Lee, along with two Hazzard County Sheriff’s cars modeled after the vehicles used in the originial series, which ran from 1979 to 1985 on CBS, and in the 2005 motion picture. The fan club will also feature its traveling “Canadian Dukes of Hazzard Museum” at the Novi comic con, which is in a new location this year, the Rock Financial Showplace. The show runs May 19, 20 and 21.

Fans will get to see “Dukes” model kits, watches, autographed photos, action figures and more, says Paul Harrington, founder / president of the Canadian Dukes of Hazzard Fan Club and a lifelong “Dukes” fan. Harrington, who had a role as an extra in the 2005 “Dukes” film, has been displaying his “Dukes” collection since 1997.

“This year will be the largest ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ display that I have ever put together in one place, including props from the original TV series and the 2005 movie, and I’m pulling many friends into this with their TV and movie star cars,” Harrington says. He purchased his own 1969 Charger in 1991 in Georgia, where the first five episodes of the show were filmed.

A hard-core “Dukes” fan through and through, Harrington is pals with Jerry Rushing, the actor, author and former moonshiner who was the inspiration behind the “Dukes,” has met all of the “Dukes” stars over the years and even featured a “Dukes”-inspired car chase in the May 2000 wedding to his wife, Cheryl. Harrington is also founder and president of the Jerry Rushing Fan Club in which Rushing’s daughter is an active member. Harrington works as a licensed mechanic in Essex, Ontario, at Elford & Stowe Ltd., where some of the display cars have been built.

Harrington’s “Dukes” display also will feature author Billie Rae Bates, a former Detroit resident now living in Metro Atlanta not far from the original “Dukes” filming sites. Bates has written and compiled a fact book on the “Dukes,” based on her own years of research and lifelong fascination with the TV show.

“Them Dukes! Them Dukes!” is a compendium that includes a cast list, character guide, episode guide, information on each of the show’s stars, a tour of original Georgia filming sites, a guide to the show’s extensive merchandise and more. Released in January of this year, the trade paperback sells for $ 15 on Amazon.com and other e-tailers. Bates will be signing copies for $ 15 on the Saturday of the show, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“When I was a teenager in the 1980s,” Bates says, “I always wondered what it would be like to live in Hazzard County. Now I practically do! But I’m really looking forward to visiting Metro Detroit again. I miss it very much.”

Bates, a veteran of the daily newspaper business, spent seven years of her career in Detroit, as an editor, writer and page designer for The Detroit News and as an editor at the corporate headquarters of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. “Them Dukes! Them Dukes!” is one of her foursome of reference books devoted to classic 1980s TV shows.

Besides the “Dukes” display, the Motor City Comic Con will feature a huge 40th anniversary celebration of the TV show “Batman,” with appearances by several of the show’s stars: Adam West, Burt Ward, Yvonne Craig, Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether and Malachi Throne. An original Batmobile will be there, along with a Batcycle, Batcomputer and other goodies.

“We’re the first convention to have this many ‘Batman’ cast members brought together at one time,” says Gary Bishop, event organizer. “And we’re the only show this year that’s celebrating the show’s 40th anniversary.”

The Motor City Comic Con runs 1:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information about the show, visit http://www.motorcitycomiccon.com. For more information about the Canadian Dukes of Hazzard Fan Club, visit http://www.canadiandukes.com, and check out http://www.brbtv.com to learn more about Bates and her work.

Jekyll Island Authority Announces Revitalization Project

Jekyll Island Authority Announces Revitalization Project

Jekyll Island, GA (PRWEB) November 26, 2008

The Jekyll Island Authority today approved a new ground lease with 150 Beachview Holdings LLC, clearing the way for an exciting new redevelopment of the former Ramada Inn/Georgia Coast Inn hotel site. The 5.8 acre beachside site has been vacant for several years, and the new project adds to the progress and momentum of the revitalization of Jekyll Island.

The new project will be a combination of a small Inn and a colony of 27-32 beachside cottages. The low density approach is a key factor in gaining support and approval.

“The Board is pleased that the leaseholder came forward with such an attractive plan for the site,” stated Bob Krueger, Chairman of the Jekyll Island Authority. “We are looking for the right balance of development and protection of natural areas, and this project fits well with the other revitalization projects that have already been announced.”

New South Partners, LLC and Global Asset Alternatives, LLC are partners in 150 Beachview Holdings and have secured the ground lease to the former hotel site after years of legal disputes. In order for the new development to move forward, an extension of the existing lease was required. That was obtained through the Jekyll Island Authority Board action on Tuesday.

“I’m thrilled to get this project moving forward,” stated Rick Patton, principal with New South Partners, LLC. “We are a Georgia company, and we know that Jekyll is a special place and this is a special site. It is deserving of a quality development that fits responsibly into the natural beachside setting.”

The former Ramada Inn was first constructed in 1961 and opened as a Holiday Inn. The property sold in 1963 and became Stuckey’s Carriage Inn, later becoming a Ramada Inn, then independent Georgia Coast Inn until closing in 2003. The hotel was popular with conventioneers and was known for its swimming pool shaped like the State of Georgia. The four-story structure fell into disrepair and was demolished in 2005. The new project will feature low-rise construction with traditional beach cottage architecture.

The revitalization of Jekyll Island now boasts five new hotel projects, including the planned Jekyll Island Beach Village, which will create a new gathering place on the island with integrated shopping, dining, plaza, park and a completely renovated and expanded Convention Center. Revitalization is being guided by several important policies that are meant to protect the character of Jekyll Island, as well as protect the natural environment and enhance conservation efforts. The new Inn & Cottages at Georgia Coast will comply with newly adopted design guidelines which provide regulation of architecture and restrict both density and building height. Projects are also monitored by a new visitation forecast model developed by Bleakly Advisory Group.

“This project fits nicely in the current forecast model,” explained Gary Mongeon with Bleakly Advisory Group. “It is lower density compared to other projects, yet provides the highest per acre return to the Jekyll Island Authority.”

The Jekyll Island Authority provides a limited number of commercial ground leases for private hotel development. Ground leases are tied to the appraised value of the land as required by law. The Jekyll Island Authority uses local appraiser Richard Freeman to determine the value range of each leased parcel.

A key component of a ground lease for new development is a rent escalation feature. Rent on a ground lease begins immediately, but escalates over the course of construction through opening and to the point of full operation.

“The rent escalation feature allows the developer to successfully get underway, and allows the Jekyll Island Authority to fully share in the future success,” stated Jones Hooks, Executive Director with the Jekyll Island Authority. “We also place constraints and requirements on the developer, so we can maintain control and not let development become bigger than what the public wants on Jekyll.”

The Jekyll Island Authority requires all development be sensitive to the natural environment, even if it is replacing an existing structure in approximately the same building footprint. The new Inn & Cottages project will stay away from the dunes line and beyond the shoreline jurisdiction line as defined by Georgia’s Shoreline Protection Act. All new projects must also comply with a new beach lighting ordinance, created with public and expert input to protect the beach from light pollution. Artificial light has been shown to disrupt the nesting and hatching behavior of the loggerhead sea turtle.

“This project is big news in a bad economy,” stated Hooks. “Development activity has all but stopped in the region, but here on Jekyll Island we have five projects moving forward.”

Jekyll Island currently has seven hotels open and operating, including the signature Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Other hotels along the beach include the boutique Beachview Club Hotel, the Days Inn & Suites, Oceanside Inn & Suites, Quality Inn, Oceanfront Clarion Resort and the Villas By The Sea. Privately owned cottages are also available for vacation rental, more information is available at jekyllisland.com. Information regarding all Jekyll Island revitalization projects and policies can be found at jekyllisland.com/news.

Jekyll Island Authority Approves Private Partnering Agreement with Linger Longer Communities

Jekyll Island Authority Approves Private Partnering Agreement with Linger Longer Communities

Jekyll Island, GA (PRWEB) December 2, 2008

In a called board meeting Monday, the Jekyll Island Authority approved a Private Partnering Agreement with Linger Longer Communities, establishing a public-private partnership intended to bring about revitalization and long-term sustainability of Jekyll Island. Linger Longer was selected by the Jekyll Island Authority in September 2007 as the revitalization partner, and has since worked with the Authority on a final Beach Village plan and a legal contract that establishes a long-term partnership.

The Beach Village plan, approved by the Jekyll Island Authority at its October meeting, creates a new public gathering place on Jekyll Island. The redevelopment project reconfigures the existing shopping district into a beachside village setting adjacent to a renovated and expanded convention center, two new hotels and a new vacation club.

Key features of the Beach Village include a large public park with additional green space and improved bicycle and pedestrian access along the entire beachfront, connecting a new plaza to public parking and enhanced beach access with improved public facilities. All beach access will remain open to the public. The final Beach Village plan is a scaled-down version of Linger Longer Communities’ original concept, but one that addresses the desire of the public for limited development on Jekyll Island.

“We are pleased to get this partnering agreement approved,” stated Bob Krueger, Chairman of the Jekyll Island Authority. “I appreciate the dedicated efforts of our counsel with the Attorney General’s office, the support of the Governor and the Legislative Oversight Committee, and especially the hard work of the negotiating teams on both sides. We will now move forward as a unified team and deliver to the citizens of Georgia a revitalized Jekyll Island that we all will be proud of.”

The Beach Village revitalization agreement incorporates elements found in typical public-private re-development partnerships including private partner financial contributions, public bond financing, and appropriate ground leases. Over the next 25 years, the Jekyll Island Authority expects to generate in excess of $ 40 million in direct revenue alone from the Beach Village revitalization project. Additionally, the Authority will also receive incremental hotel/motel taxes, convention center revenues, and parking fees from increased island visitation.

The public portion of the Beach Village project will be supported by $ 25 million of public bonds. The Authority will repay the bonds directly from revenues generated by the new revitalization projects.

“Getting this agreement done in this economic climate is a great achievement, and I am proud of the hard work and commitment of this Board,” commented Steve Croy, Vice Chairman of the Jekyll Island Authority. “The Beach Village is vital to our revitalization efforts, which just took a mighty step forward.”

Linger Linger Communities, a Georgia company based in Greensboro, Georgia, is known for quality planned developments on Lake Oconee in Greene County east of Atlanta, and in North Georgia. Linger Longer Communities has set themselves apart in their approach, creating communities which respect their natural surroundings.

“We are excited to get this partnership agreement accomplished and proud to now be a partner with the Jekyll Island Authority,” states Mercer Reynolds, Chairman and CEO of Linger Longer Communities. “We look forward to assisting the JIA in achieving its vision of revitalizing Jekyll Island and making it a recreational and learning destination that all Georgians can enjoy for generations to come.”

Linger Longer Communities brings to the partnership substantial experience in the development and operation of large-scale recreational facilities – as evidenced in its creation and management of such places as Reynolds Plantation, Reynolds Landing and Lake Oconee Village in Greene County, Georgia. Many of Linger Longer’s projects consistently win national and international awards for the quality of their operations and the recreational experiences of their guests.

The revitalization of Jekyll Island seeks to establish the right balance of redevelopment with protection of the natural environment. All new building construction on the island is taking place on land that is already developed, and must comply with Jekyll Island’s design guidelines and beach lighting ordinance in addition to existing environmental laws including the Georgia Shoreline Protection Act. State law also mandates that 65% of Jekyll Island must remain in a natural state. These important policies ensure that development on Jekyll Island will be limited and have minimal impact on sea turtle nesting habitat and other sensitive natural areas.

“Linger Longer, like our other hotel partners here on Jekyll Island truly ‘gets it’,” stated Jones Hooks, Jekyll Island’s Executive Director. “Successful development must embrace limitations and protection, which is why people choose to come here.”

Jekyll Island now boasts five revitalization projects at various stages. A new Hampton Inn & Suites is already under construction at the former site of the Holiday Inn and is expected to open late summer 2009. Last week, a new inn and cottage development was announced for the former site of the Ramada Inn, with an anticipated completion date of April 2011. The new Beach Village is also expected to be completed in 2011.

Jekyll Island currently has seven hotels open and operating, including the signature Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Other hotels along the beach include the Beachview Club, the Days Inn & Suites, Oceanside Inn & Suites, Quality Inn, Oceanfront Clarion Resort and Villas By The Sea. Cottages are also available for vacation rental; more information is available at jekyllisland.com. Information regarding all Jekyll Island revitalization projects and policies can be found at http://www.jekyllisland.com/news.

American Made Cars

How do you know if your car is made in America?  The pride Americans used to take in owning an “American-made” vehicle seemed to disappear for a few years, but has recently been making a comeback, along with a strong desire to help local companies and the U.S. economy.  But while this should be an easy question to answer, since almost everyone knows which automakers are American companies, these days it is not that simple.  It has become difficult to even tell what constitutes an “American-made car”, since automakers now have plants all over the world.  Foreign companies are now making cars in the United States, while Ford, GMC, and Chrysler can have vehicles manufactured globally.

Today, it is nearly impossible to find a vehicle that is 100-percent made in the U.S.A.  While most of the U.S. automakers are still manufacturing vehicles here, the parts that go into those cars may be imported from foreign countries.  Additionally, each car manufacturer may have different cars built in different countries.  For example, while Chevy builds its Tahoe in the United States, the Camaro is assembled in Canada.  These types of global expansion make it difficult to know exactly where your vehicle was made.

However, there are ways to determine which cars are more American than others.  The labels on new cars tell consumers where the vehicle was assembled, and where certain parts, such as the engine and transmission, originated.  While it is up to each consumer to decide what he constitutes as made in America, these labels can help make that determination, since most of the work that does into making a car is done at the assembly plant.  Therefore, although a vehicle’s engine or transmission may be imported, if it is assembled in the United States, it is pretty much as American-made as you can get.

Another thing to consider is whether a foreign company building vehicles in the United States could be considered American-made.  Currently, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW all have assembly plants in the U.S.  In fact, Honda builds more vehicles in the United States, than in its home country, Japan; and Kia recently celebrated its 100,000 Sorento rolling off the line at its plant in West Point, Georgia.  Volkswagen has also announced plans to open its first plant in the United States, in Tennessee.

Some examples of foreign models that are actually built locally include Toyota’s Camry and Highlander, Hyundai’s Sonata and Elantra, BMW’s X-series SUVs, and Mercedes’ ML-, R-, and G- Class vehicles.  Telsa’s electric vehicles are also being assembled in the U.S., but the bodywork is completed in England before being shipped to California.

Whether the company does all or some of its work in the United States they are still providing jobs for local economies around the country.  Assembly plants, administrative offices and even dealerships are all providing jobs and support for local communities. Choosing to buy “American-made” is great and you’re options aren’t as limited as you may think.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) May 14, 2004

We are delighted to announce the results of the University of San Francisco 2004 International Business Plan Competition. The USF contest, one of the most competitive events of its kind, with over 150 graduate student entrepreneur team applications from 100 universities in 18 countries around the world, for the 25 semifinalist positions, was an exciting, enriching, and exhausting experience for everyone involved. The intense competition to present at USF is driven largely by the world-class caliber and quantity of the venture capitalist partners and CEOs that judge the event. This yearÂ?s contest included more than 50 judges representing many leading venture capital firms (e.g., Asset Management, Garage Technology Ventures, Hummer Winblad, and Kleiner Perkins), investment banking firms (e.g., Pacific Growth Equities), law firms (e.g., Hanson Bridgett), commercial companies (e.g., Pacific Specialty Insurance), entrepreneurs (e.g., NAPSTER founder Shawn Fanning), and government agencies (e.g., NASA).

The USF Entrepreneur Contest was held March 31 to April 3, 2004 at the USF Lone Mountain Campus and the Hyatt, SF FishermanÂ?s Wharf. The agenda included: warm-up/feedback sessions on the first day with a mixer in the evening, a cable car tour of San Francisco and elevator pitch contest on the second day, semifinal sessions and a formal dinner on the third day, and a final round session and wine-tasting awards reception on the fourth day.

Naturally, all of the semifinalists that competed at the USF Contest were winners in their own right, receiving extensive exposure to and feedback from leading Silicon Valley venture capitalists and senior executives. The venture capitalists judging the event were clearly impressed with the semifinalist teams they saw. For example, Joe Mandato, partner with De Novo Ventures, indicated, Â?The quality of the teams spoke volumes on USF’s growing recognition as a leading center of global entrepreneurship.Â? Ian Patrick Sobieski, general partner of the Band of Angels Fund, added, Â?The event was packed with innovators and their innovations. It was both a business opportunity and intellectual feast.”

At least seven entrepreneur teams that were approached by venture capitalists for further discussions during or shortly after the contest. Ronald DiFelice, a finalist from the University of North Carolina, for his company, Alpha V, confirmed, Â?The competition was a great experience – we received invaluable feedback about the business and the exposure for the company was immense. We ended up having five solid contacts to follow up with after the event.” David Vinca, a finalist from the University of Chicago for his company, Ripula, echoed this sentiment, saying, Â?The judges represented the best VC funds in the San Francisco area. The judges were honest, constructive, and in some cases very encouraging! Finally, the organizers planned an event (down to the important details) that encouraged networking and facilitated important feedback for the business plan teams. The competition far exceeded our expectations.” Team faculty advisors also found the time and effort for the trip to USF worthwhile. Steven J. DeKrey, Ph.D., associate dean, and director, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Business School, commented, Â?Many thanks for your heroic efforts in hosting such an exceptional competition. It was by all accounts world class and a joy to attend. Â? My team, Free to GOal, learned a great deal and will carry these lessons through their lifetime.”

We expect that most of the teams that competed at USF will prosper in their chosen ventures, and we look forward to supporting their efforts and tracking and reporting their progress over the coming months and years. We invite graduate student entrepreneur teams from all nations to apply to compete at the USF 2005 Contest (http://www.BusinessPlanCompetition.org).
