Toyota Adopts DuPont Renewably Sourced Material for its New Model “SAI®”

DuPont announced that fibers made from DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer were adopted as materials for the ceiling surface skin, sun visor and pillar garnish of Toyota’s new model, SAI®. DuPont™ Sorona® fibers also were adopted as materials for optional floor mats sold under the Toyota brand.
The new model SAI®, launched last month, is an intensively ecological “compact luxury car” equipped with an overwhelming percentage of eco-plastics made from plant-based materials which comprise approximately 60 percent of the car’s internal surface area. The new car will be on sale through dealerships in Japan.

DuPont™ Sorona® polymer is a PTT resin made from a copolymerization of 1,3-propanediol, which is derived from plant sugar using a DuPont biotechnological fermentation process, and terephthalic acid. Using Sorona® polymer will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions, compared to using other petroleum-based materials which are used for conventional auto interior parts. This also will contribute to measures against global warming and to saving depletable resources.
PTT fibers made from Sorona® polymer meet strict performance requirements for automotive use while having rich and soft texture and good hand-feel.
The adoption reflects the company’s recently announced commitment to focus on meeting four emerging global trends, one of which is decreasing dependence on fossil fuels.

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. announced this week that it is slamming the brakes on the manufacturing and sales of many of its bestselling models in the U.S. The decision to suspend production and sales follows a series of safety recalls involving millions of vehicles.
Toyota announced a recall of more than 4 million cars and trucks last September, saying that driver-side floor mats could interfere with the accelerator pedal and cause the vehicle to accelerate suddenly and unintentionally. On January 22, Toyota announced another recall of 2.3 million American cars and trucks, saying that the gas pedal mechanisms could wear out over time and cause the accelerator to stick or grow unresponsive.
Beasley Allen is currently investigating cases of sudden unintended acceleration affecting a large number of Toyota vehicles. Beasley Allen investigators are disputing the argument that this problem is entirely linked to the floor mats or accelerator pedals.
Beasley Allen Shareholder Graham Esdale has become a leading voice in the investigation of these cases. He has been called on by national, regional and local media outlets including the Los Angeles Times, ABC News, WSMV-TV Nashville and WAKA-TV Montgomery to address this dangerous issue. Graham and his team at Beasley Allen have examined hundreds of incidents of Unintended Acceleration from throughout the country and are currently investigating approximately 30 potential cases.
Esdale has one case involving serious injury and death currently filed on behalf of an Oklahoma client (civil action number CJ-2008-7969, District Court of Oklahoma County, State of Oklahoma) . In this case, the client’s car began speeding out of control even after she had removed her foot from the accelerator pedal. The client was critically injured when her car left the interstate as a result and crashed, and her friend, who was a passenger, was killed. Esdale said photos of the vehicle reveal the floor mat is properly secured and there is no evidence that the mat jammed the gas pedal.
Recent evidence turned up by ABC News also supports Esdale’s claims. The news agency reported that just after Christmas, four people died when the Toyota they were in sped out of control and landed upside down in a pond. Investigators found the floor mats had been removed and stashed in the trunk as the vehicle’s owners had been instructed.
Another recent incident involved a New Jersey man whose Avalon accelerated violently. Kevin Haggerty told ABC News that he managed to navigate his racing car to his dealership by shifting repeatedly between drive and neutral. When he arrived, the service manger was able to verify that the floor mat and gas pedal were not to blame.
“It’s not a sticking accelerator pedal. Just like it wasn’t the floor mats,” Esdale alleges.

The new 4.6-liter V8 engine is available on all 2010 model year Tundras. It features a DOHC aluminum alloy head with dual independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). With 310 horsepower, 327 lb-ft. of torque and EPA fuel efficiency estimates of 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway on 4×2 models, the new engine delivers the best combination of power and fuel economy estimates of any standard V8 in the full-size pickup segment. Like Tundra’s optional 5.7-liter i-FORCE V8 engine, the new 4.6-liter V8 is mated with a six-speed automatic transmission.
All 2010 Tundra models received a redesigned front grille and tail lamps. The Tundra grade has a new two-bar grille design and the Limited grade is equipped with a unique billet-style grille. Additional standard equipment on all Tundra models includes driver and front passenger knee airbags, height-adjustable headlamps, and a redesigned seven-pin towing hitch connector that sits above the hitch to help avoid damage during high departure angle driving.
The new 2010 Tundra Work Truck Package is aimed at commercial truck buyers or those who otherwise require a tough no-frills truck with exceptional cargo and towing capacity. The specialized trucks include vinyl seating and rubber flooring and are available in Regular and Double Cab configurations with a V6 or one of two V8 engines including Tundra’s powerful 381 horsepower 5.7-liter V8 with a towing capability of up to 10,800 pounds. Tundra models equipped with an optional work truck package will carry a price adjustment less than the truck’s standard MSRP. Price adjustments vary, depending on the model.
For buyers looking for a high level of refinement and convenience, the all-new Platinum Package is available on 2010 Tundra CrewMax Limited models equipped with the 5.7-liter V8 and Flex Fuel powertrains. The unfolding story surrounding recalls related to faulty design in several Toyota vehicles is alarming in its implications for the automobile manufacturer, says Houston personal injury attorney Brad T. Wyly.
“Toyota has long been held up as one of the world’s premier automobile manufacturers, but over the last several weeks we’ve seen a new report just about every day about safety issues,” said Wyly, who represents individuals injured in motor vehicle accidents. “Certainly more investigation will be necessary, but the legal implications for the company, in terms of liability, have yet to be fully tallied.”
Toyota, the world’s No. 1 carmaker in terms of sales, has recalled 8.5 million vehicles worldwide since October for problems linked to scores of deaths in the United States.
The Associated Press reported on Feb. 15 that the government has received new complaints that bring to 34 the number of deaths in Toyota vehicles since 2000 allegedly linked to a sudden acceleration in some models.
Several Toyota cars may have design flaws that cause accelerators to stick, according to various news reports. The company halted production at five plants in North America so its workers could repair the recalled vehicles.
President Akio Toyoda acknowledged in an opinion piece published in The Washington Post on Feb. 9 that the company had “failed to connect the dots” between sticky accelerators in Europe identified as early as December 2008 and those in the U.S. that culminated in the massive recalls.
“Clearly, Toyota should be held to answer if its actions or rather inactions, in correcting the acceleration problems are to blame for these fatalities and other injuries” said Wyly, whose firm handles claims for clients injured in automobile accidents and as a result of defective products. “Where there may have been negligence that led to injury and death, our firm sides with the individual consumer.”

Hendrick’s could not find an organization involved in that type of activity, Mrs. Hendricks suggested to her husband that he should start one.
According to Toys for Tots, the original 1947 campaign proved “so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign.” Toys for Tots continued to grow with the participation of many notable American celebrities. Toyota Japanese auto maker, is keen on increasing it’s assembly line efficiency.
